The technical field to which the invention relates.

This invention relates to an electronic device with a display and method for presenting and browsing metadata using a graphical user interface (GUI), receiving the input signals of the rotation sensor.

The level of technology

Reducing the size of handheld electronic devices such as mobile phones and MP3 players, challenges for developers user interface (UI) and GUI, as it is difficult to achieve effective user interaction with small and compact multi-function devices.

Adding push buttons or overload their use through the introduction of keyboard shortcuts and complex menu systems have been previously investigated, but resulted in a significant restriction of user interaction with the electronic device.

In the patent application U.S. 2003/0085870 describes how to improve the susceptibility of electronic devices through the introduction of the means of perception of how devices are manipulating, and converting user actions into commands to be performed. In particular Windows that are open in a certain orientation, hide, when the orientation is changed.

Also the number and complexity of functions is such as handheld devices, constantly growing, which again increases performance requirements on the UI and GUI. Viewing and navigating large amounts of data, therefore, is still a problem because of the inherent limitations in screen size and UI.

Therefore, to improve the efficiency of the user interface there is a need for electronic devices with user interfaces that are able to provide easy view and view large amounts of data.

The invention

Object of the invention is preferred weakening, softening or removing one or more of the above-mentioned disadvantages by providing the user the ability to open and close the options menu of the handheld device by turning the device.

This object is achieved by providing, in a first aspect, an improved handheld electronic device having a display for presenting and viewing metadata. Such electronic display device solves the above problems of the prior art through the use of the controller graphical user interface is configured to maintain at the first turn of the electronic display device from the first to the W is Roy orientation of some panels in the displayed graphical user interface with menus, viewed before the first turn, and adding at least one panel in the displayed graphical user interface with a menu that represents a hierarchical supercategory or sub-categories that can be viewed before turning. Menu-related additional items the categories can be thus opened or closed by rotation of the device by the user, which provides the advantage of viewing the data with a reduced use of user interfaces, such as a pointing device and keyboard. During the second rotation of the display device back from the second to the first orientation of the panel in the displayed graphical user interface is deleted.

The GUI controller can be implemented via software GUI stored in a memory device connected to the electronic processor for access and execution of the software GUI. Panels can here be understood as separate sections in the GUI representing related data, such as associated with the same data or object. Metadata is understood here as the data that describe the content of these associated data, and which can be organized into different categories, such as category, song title and artist for the music files or the majority o the series, the sender and date of receipt for e-mail. The metadata controller graphical user interface can define a hierarchical ordering of metadata, which means that metadata categories are or may be classified or assigned, for example, through a GUI controller, in successive levels or layers or overlapping hierarchical structure, which can be logically determined by the types of metadata categories, but which can also be easily applied on a serial (e.g., alphabetical) order. Each category is represented by a menu of items category in the displayed graphical user interface, and each menu is displayed in a separate panel. You are viewing category means menu items category under selection or navigation (movement) of the user, such as scrolling, marking or lighting, or other activities, or which is the last menu in which the user has made a selection or navigation.

In the second aspect of the invention provides a method for presenting and browsing metadata on a handheld electronic device, and this method includes:

- providing metadata located in various categories,

- define a hierarchical arrangement metadata;

- before the vision of each category by menu category object in the graphical user interface, be displayed on the display device, where each menu is shown in separate panels;

- displays a graphical user interface with at least one panel containing peruse the menu of interest category;

after the first device is rotated from the first to the second orientation:

by maintaining the displayed graphical user interface panel with a menu that can be viewed before turning; and

- add at least one panel in the displayed graphical user interface with a menu that represents a hierarchical supercategory or sub-categories that can be viewed before the first turn; and

- after the second rotation of the display device back from the second to the first orientation:

- remove the panel in the displayed graphical user interface.

In the third aspect of the invention relates to a program product for instructing a processor to perform the method according to the preceding aspect of the invention, when this product is executed on an electronic processor in a handheld electronic device with a display.

The above and further various definitions, options for implementation, examples, and implementation even described in relation to only one aspect that applies to all aspects of the invention.

Note the ry metadata for audio and video data contain artists, albums, playlists, ratings, date, genre, and title. Examples of metadata for lists of contacts on the mobile phones can be the first/last name, company, group, respect.

The specified rotation of the display device is performed from the first orientation to the second orientation, the first orientation is preferably rotated approximately 90° relative to the second orientation. Preferably between the first and second orientation have a threshold angle, such as 45°, for which the GUI controller assumes that the user intends to change the orientation. Preferably the display is rectangular, and the first and second orientations are portrait and landscape orientation, or Vice versa.

In one embodiment, a menu is preferably added when the device is rotated from portrait on the album, and added a panel will be shown around the panel with a menu that can be viewed before turning. After the second rotation back to portrait orientation menu, not viewable after the second turn, can be removed. In another related embodiment, a menu is preferably added when the device is rotated from album to portrait, and added a panel will be shown above or below the panel with a menu that can be viewed before what OBOROTOM. After second rotate back to landscape orientation, menu, review after the second turn, can be removed. These embodiments of benefit optimal use of space of the display, and what an implementation option to use may depend on the type of metadata, graphical representations, and applications.

In yet another embodiment, a menu is preferably added when the device is rotated the first time within a specified period of time, and some menu preferably removed when the device is rotated a second time within a specified period of time. This provides the advantage that the user can quickly open and close the advanced menu by turning and turning in the opposite direction of the device, regardless of the initial orientation of the device. A specified period of time used for distinguishing between rotation, which maximizes the metadata, and rotation in the opposite direction, which minimizes the metadata.

In a preferred embodiment, pointing device is a multi-point touch pad, and the selection and viewing using multi touch actions. In this embodiment, the controller graphic user is Yelsk interface preferably is additionally configured to determine, by entering with multipoint tablet, unwrapping or compressive action of the user, and adding or removing at least one panel in the displayed graphical user interface with a menu that represents a hierarchical supercategory or sub-categories that can be viewed, when it was determined unwrapping or compressive action of the user. This option is advantageous because it provides you with additional control expanding/collapsing a different menu categories. When applying, for example, to the example above, the user may, through the action unfolding on multi-point touch tablet to create a place for the third panel, such as a playlist, or remove one of the panels through the compressive action. The display panel can be located obliquely in the case of lack of space and arranged to be visible by the user.

In one embodiment, the first orientation and the second orientation are detected based on the analysis of data from one or more accelerometers, and a sensor for detecting rotation of the electronic display device is preferably a three-dimensional acceleration sensor. This sensor allows the detection of rotation, the AK and tilt of the display device. These movements can be set through the image of some axis through the display, which is perpendicular to the display surface. The rotation is a rotation of the device around the axis when the axis is kept pointing in a fixed direction, and the slope is the change in the direction of this axis in the absence of rotation of the device. Most often the movements are a combination of movements of tilt and rotation. When the device is, for example, is held exactly, for example, lying on the table so that the axis is vertical, the rotation detection can be disabled, so as landscape and portrait orientation does not differ clearly in this case.

Preferably the rotation sensor allows the use of hysteresis in detecting changes in orientation. For example, it delays the response to the turning for inaccurate actions which may occur accidentally.

The basic idea of embodiments of the present invention is the implementation of opportunities expand or collapse categories of metadata shown in the GUI, by using a rotation sensor that does not require the use of a traditional pointing device UI for this action.

Detailed description of the invention

In the following, embodiments of a handheld electronic device with a display and a way to view the metadata according to the invention are described in relation to figure 1-3.

1 schematically illustrates an example handheld electronic device 1, a display 2 for displaying and viewing metadata in accordance with some embodiment of the present invention. The display 2 displays a GUI for viewing metadata. Input data for viewing and selection in the graphical user interface are entered by the user through the pointing device 3, such as the multi sensorielle, the mouse, a pointing rod, roller touchpad or buttons to control navigation/arrow keys. Pointing device 3 in this embodiment is a multi-point touch tablet. Multi-point touch tablet 3 is used for receiving user input for viewing and selection in the graphical user interface. When the electronic device is held in a first orientation (here, a portrait), the GUI controller (not shown) displays the first panel 4 with the menu 5 objects 6 categories according to the metadata. In this embodiment, the objects 6 categories of metadata that describes the content of the associated data, here the music files are the names of the 6 songs assosiated with 7 images. The user can view the metadata by panning and/or selection of song titles in this menu.

Figure 2 shows the display device 1 according to figure 1 after the rotation from the first orientation to the second orientation (here, the album). A sensor for detecting rotation of the electronic display device (not shown) takes a turn and sends the input signal to the GUI controller, which detects the rotation between different orientations. After turning the GUI controller supports the panel 4 to display the GUI menu 5 viewed before turning parts, all specifications shall ohms. Also, the GUI controller adds the panel 8 in the display GUI menu 9 representing hierarchical supercategory or sub-categories that can be viewed before turning. Category metadata of the new menu 9 is determined based on the hierarchical ordering of metadata. This arrangement may be present in the sequence in which the items of metadata categories are listed in the files (such as comma-separated or similar) and, therefore, will simply be a matter of GUI controller. Alternatively, the GUI controller can assign a hierarchical ordering for metadata on the basis of commands programmed into the display device. As will be clear to a person skilled in the technical field, there are numerous options for a hierarchical ordering of metadata, depending on the type of device and specific application. In the embodiment shown in figure 2, menu 5 name 6 songs supported in panel 4, and the menu 9 name 10 albums, which is supercategories menu 5 name 6 songs added in the second panel 8 in the displayed GUI. This second panel 8 is separated from the panel 4 by means of the separator 11 panels. Rotate from portrait orientation to landscape orientation, thus, led to the deployment of metadata categories, shown in the GUI, here with supercute the RIA metadata you are viewing before turning.

Such an implementation option, where the panel menu item in the category is removed from the displayed GUI, provision may be made by contacting the above-mentioned process and the device is rotated from the second orientation (figure 2) to the first orientation (Fig 1). Before turning visible menu 5 panel 4. In this case, the rotation from portrait orientation to landscape orientation will lead to the collapse of metadata categories, shown in the GUI, by removing the panel with 8 menu 9, representing supercategory metadata that can be viewed before turning.

Previously we described several options for when to add and when to remove the panel and menu after turning, and various schemes to control the user to add and remove menu. They can all be implemented in a similar way to option implementation described above in relation to figures 1 and 2.

Figure 3 shows another variant implementation of the invention-based device with multi touch pad 1 and 2. Here, the controller graphical user interface is configured to add, through the action of the expander user on the displayed GUI according to figure 2, third panel 12 containing additional menu 13 of the records of the 14 categories of metadata. The merits of the existing panel 4 and 8 can be are inclined to display the third panel 12 and host more metadata. The second separator 15 panels, therefore, is to distinguish three different panels. The user can then, through the action of the expander to multi-point touch tablet, to create a new panel to accommodate larger amounts of metadata. In this case, the panel will reduce its size, and menu preferably modify their angle in order to give place for new panels and still be visible to the user. If the user feels that he is not interested in one of the displayed panels, he can choose to view only the desired pane by hiding unwanted panel using compressive action.

GUI controller some variant of implementation of the present invention can be implemented in any suitable form including hardware, software, firmware or any combination thereof. GUI controller or some of its features can be implemented as computer software running on one or more data processors and/or digital signal processors. The elements and components of some variant of the implementation of the GUI controller may be physically, functionally and logically implemented in any suitable way. In fact, this functionality is the ability can be implemented in a single block, in many units, or as part of other functional blocks.

Figure 4 is an illustration of the hardware some variant of implementation of the display device 1 according to a certain aspect of the invention. Here, the GUI controller is embodied as a software product stored in the memory and executable by the electronic processor. The memory may be, for example, flash memory or hard disk, and the electronic processor can be, for example, the CPU. In this case, the GUI controller there is provided by the combination of the software product GUI, memory, and processor. The rotation sensor detects the orientation of the device and passes this orientation to the GUI controller. The GUI controller determines the content displayed GUI via the input user data from the pointing device and the rotation sensor.

Figure 5 is a block diagram 18 to illustrate the architecture of some variant of implementation of the software product in accordance with one aspect of the invention, such as a software GUI mentioned in relation to figure 4. In addition, the block-scheme 18 illustrates one variant of the method for presenting and viewing metadata in accordance with another aspect of the present invention.

In the rectangle 20 software GUI accesses the metadata and subsequently the t them by categories. Metadata can be stored in the same memory, display device, and the software GUI, in another memory of the display device, or external to the display device, for example, accessible over a network connection. In the rectangle 21 GUI uses a hierarchical ordering of metadata, which in a simple embodiment, means that it will detect or assigns the order in which metadata should be subcategories/supercategories for each other when adding or removing menu, as described below. In the rectangle 22 software GUI represents each category through menu items categories, as shown, for example, by menu 5, showing the list of songs 7 in figure 1. In the rectangle 23 software GUI provides a display of at least one panel contains a menu in the display. In the rectangle 24 software GUI accepts input from the rotation sensor and supports the previous display panel (rectangle 25) with menus that can be viewed before the turn, and either adds at least one panel (rectangle 26), or remove one panel (rectangle 27) with a menu that represents a hierarchical supercategory or sub-categories that can be viewed before turning.

This image is etenia is in particular, but not exclusively, advantageous for handheld devices, which display content that has multiple metadata, like music players, mobile phones, PDA, digital cameras, electronic calendars, electronic mailbox, office applications such as Excel. As an example, the invention can be applied to any portable display device, which can be rotated by the user. The term "pocket" was used throughout the description just to indicate that the display device is a device which the user can manipulate or which the user can turn any suitable controlled manner, and that such manipulation or rotation by the user preferably must be performed by hand. As an additional example, the invention can be applied to music players, such as i-Pod Touch or i-Phone®. In them rotate from portrait to landscape orientation after viewing the category metadata such as titles, leads to the view only the categories pane of the names of albums, but the song titles are invisible. By applying this invention, the device is rotated from portrait to album can lead to unfolding in two panel GUI, for example, a menu item is Estalagem category titles in the same panel, and menus, representing the category names of the songs in the other.
