Use of "acrylic dispersant-associative thickener" combination in alkyd paint for enhancing gloss retention

FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: dispersant is a copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid with an alkyl oxide monomer, having a polymerisable functional group and terminated by a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms. The thickener is an associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group which is a polystyrylphenyl, preferably selected from distyrylphenyl, tristyrylphenyl and mixtures thereof. More preferably, the hydrophobic group is tristyrylphenyl.

EFFECT: dispersant-thickener combination enables to enhance gloss retention of a paint film over time, while providing the aqueous composition with the required rheological properties.

In General water-based paint is composed of water, mineral or organic pigment and a polymeric binder, providing the ultimate cohesion between the set of components of the paint. It is well known that the gloss of the film the end of the dry paint is the result of good quality of dispersion of the pigment in this regard, specialists in the field of technology developed additives, which are referred to as "dispersant" and the function of which is to ensure high-quality translation of pigment in the state of dispersion. This paint also contains additives, whose role is to make the environment appropriate viscosity for stability during storage, transportation, loading in technical devices and application: it is about the rheology modifiers or thickeners.

Among these thickeners experts in the art have long known special category thickeners, called "associative" in the sense that they contain at least one hydrophobic monomer capable to demonstrate interaction, called associative, and thus sagemath environment in which you contribute. Such structures are widely described in the literature, in particular, J.E. Glass et al., for example, (I) J. Oil, Color Chemists Assn. Also in the General case, it is well known that the dispersing agents and thickeners (preferably associative type) can be in the environment paints a complex interaction (see WO 93 09187), with associative thickeners can interact with the possibly present surface-active substances (see EP 0 905 1571), which may lead to deterioration of the paint, such as, in particular, the rheological properties and gloss.

This problem is more acute in the special case of water colours that are discussed in this application, including due to the very special properties that make up the essence of the technical problems of this application.

Among the various categories of water-based paints have one type of ink, which now acquires a special significance: it is about the so-called "alkyd paints". The term is meant as a reference to the polyesters formed by the reaction of organic acids with polyols, and alkida called Uralkali and formed by condensation of poly is fishing with isocyanate groups. Historically alkyd paint was obtained in the presence of organic solvents, which was the main phase, which was dispersible alkyd resin. Currently, international legislation on emissions of volatile organic compounds (Sbornik Prispevku - Mezinarodni Konference - Naterovich Homtach - 37th- Rp. Tch., 22-24 may 2006, 92-104) requires specialists in the art to refer to alkyd paints, water-based.

To this end, use is made of surface-active substances, the function of which consists in the dispersion of alkyd resin in the presence of water; however, to facilitate dispersion of the resin in aqueous phase using organic solvents, but in a less significant extent than before. Thus, working in conditions of complex systems, where the presence of surfactants and organic solvents constitutes the first obstacle to identify the optimal combination of dispersant/associative thickener".

Moreover, in the framework of such alkyd water-based systems, if a high gloss is an important requirement, saving such an extent during aging film also forms part of the technical requirements considered by experts in the field of technology. Even more difficult is how it is saving is largely gloss film depending on the time of applying the paint is the most difficult requirement for specialists in this field of technology. In practice, this difficulty reflects the reality of industrial application of paint. The paint is produced without purpose it for immediate application: however, as in the case of immediate application of paint, and after several weeks of storage it formed a dry film should have the same gloss level. This property is denoted by the term "conservation gloss".

Finally, in the case of alkyd paints, water-based, produced in this way, it is necessary to take into account the rheological properties required by specialists in this field of technology. These properties are characterized by the values of viscosity by Brookfield viscometer™, defined at 10 rpm and 25°C, in the range from 4 000 to 10 000 MPa·S. This interval corresponds to a compromise to avoid the phenomenon of phase separation, the appearance of the supernatant liquid or syneresis (with the advent of very low viscosity) and thus ensures good filling tool used for drawing, excellent flow or optimal tension at the level of film properties, deteriorating at too high viscosity).

Thus, the technical problem which is the subject of this application, combined with the search for a combination of dispersant/thickener for complex systems that use surface-active the e substances and organic solvents and which are alkyd compositions are water-based, to improve the characteristics of the conservation degree of gloss. Getting high gloss finish immediately after applying and maintaining such an extent for the dry film of paint in the course of aging and aging paint is also part of the technical problem of the present invention. The last part of the above mentioned technical problem is the development of alkyd compositions are water-based, the viscosity of which Brookfield viscometer™defined at 10 rpm and 25°C, is in the range from 4 000 to 10 000 MPa·S.

To address this problem, the applicant has developed the use in the composition of the alkyd resin water-based agent that improves the preservation gloss dry film formed after the application of these compositions, combinations dispersant/thickener", characterized in that:

a dispersant is a copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer having a functional group capable of polymerization, and having on the end a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;

the thickener is an associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group, representing polystyrene, preferably selected from distillery, christianfree and their mixtures, and more site is preferably representing cristianini.

It has been unexpectedly found that the combination of such a dispersant and thickener leads to improved retention of gloss dry film of paint, thus giving the composition of paint required rheological properties (absence of phase separation, the supernatant liquid and syneresis, good filling tool, good spreading and satisfactory tension during application).

It may be recalled that the following structures (1) and (2) mean distillery and cristianini respectively:

Such structures are known to experts in the art in applications as associative thickeners, in EP 1425325 to improve the compatibility of pigments, in EP 0705852 and EP 0705854 for more rheology modifiers, effective at low dose, in EP 1806386 to maintain an acceptable viscosity in the case of high content of pigments (as described in EP 1425325).

However, in the literature there is no information that associative thickeners, involving the previously mentioned groups, in combination with the dispersant, representing the copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer, forming agents, which improve the preservation of the degree of gloss. One of the achievements of the applicant is to identify among many is esta available dispersant and associative thickeners such agents, the combination of which leads to improved rheological properties and preservation gloss respectively provided specifications. This achievement is all the more significant due to the fact that the songs are alkyd paints, water-based, containing surfactants and organic solvents, relative to the known harmful interactions that they can take with associative thickeners.

Thus, the first object of the present invention is the use in the composition of the alkyd resin water-based agent that improves the preservation gloss dry film formed after the application of these compositions, combinations dispersant/thickener", characterized in that:

a dispersant is a copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer having a functional group capable of polymerization, and having on the end a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;

the thickener is an associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group, representing polystyrene, preferably selected from distillery, christianfree and mixtures thereof, and more preferably, not only the expansion of cristianini.

This application also differs in that the dispersant is a copolymer of acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer having a functional group capable of polymerization, and having on the end a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

This application also differs in the fact that used for dispersant alkyloxy monomer contains from 5 to 150, preferably from 10 to 115 ethylenoxide and/or propylenoxide links.

This application also differs in the fact that used for dispersant alkyloxy monomer at the end is a hydrogen atom or methyl group.

This application also differs in the fact that used for dispersant alkylamino monomer functional group capable of polymerization, is a methacrylate group.

This application also differs in that the dispersant has a molecular weight in the range from 15 000 to 110 000 g/mol and preferably from 20 000 to 60 000 g/mol.

This application also differs in the fact that the associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group, representing distillery, cristianini or a mixture of distillery and tristellateia, corresponds to the formula (I):

- V is W mean urethane bond;

- a denotes a real number in the interval from 1 to 5;

- OX1, OX2and OX3are alkylamine groups based on ethylenoxide and/or propyleneoxide groups;

- R is a hydrophobic group, representing polystyrene, preferably selected from distillery, christianfree and mixtures thereof, and more preferably represents cristianini.

This application also differs in the fact that the associative thickener number ethylenoxide and/or propylenoxide links in groups OX1and OX3is in the range from 2 to 100.

This application also differs in the fact that the associative thickener number ethylenoxide and/or propylenoxide links in the group OX2is in the range from 100 to 500.

This application also differs in the fact that the associative thickener R is a hydrophobic group, representing cristianini.

This application also differs in the fact that the associative thickener has a molecular weight in the range from 5 000 to 80 000 g/mol and preferably from 5 000 to 40 000 g/mol.

This application also differs in that the alkyd resin selected from polyester, polyurethane, polifemo-polyurethane resins and mixtures thereof.

a dispersant is a copolymer of (meth)acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer having a functional group capable of polymerization, and having on the end a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms;

the thickener is an associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group, representing polystyrene, preferably selected from distillery, christianfree and mixtures thereof, and more preferably represents cristianini.

EXAMPLES

Each of the following experiments were started with getting paint mixing according to the techniques known to experts in the art, the various components in the proportions shown in table 1.

In each of the experiments No. 1-19 measured viscosity by Brookfield viscometer™ at 10 rpm and 25°C after 24 hours, 10 days, 1 and 3 months after the manufacture of paints (see table 1).

Also determined the gloss at an angle of 20° (OTDR Micro-Tri-Gloss™, marketed by the company BYK GARDNER™, according to the standard NF T 30-064) after 1 day, 1 and 3 months after the application of paint, and the paint was applied a week, 1 or 3 months after manufacture of the population (see table 2 below).

From this table it is clear that only the combination corresponding to the experiments No. 13, 17-19, lead to viscosity by Brookfield viscometer™, determined at 25°C and 10 rpm in the range from 4 000 to 10 000 MPa·s, which is consistent with the specialists in this field of technology. In addition, in experiments No. 12 and No. 16 was unable to determine viscosity, as are compositions were thickened.

Litter "m 1J" means that measurement was carried out after 1 day after application of the paint.

It can be noted that only the experiments corresponding to the present invention, allow to retain a degree of gloss of the paint film, regardless of the time of paint application, in particular, after the retention period is 3 months.

2. The use according to claim 1, characterized in that the dispersant is a copolymer of acrylic acid with alkyloxyaryl monomer having a functional group capable of polymerization, and having on the end a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms.

3. The use according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that used for dispersant alkyloxy monomer contains from 5 to 150 and preferably from 10 to 115 ethylenoxide and/or propylenoxide links.

4. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that used for dispersant alkyloxy monomer at the end is a hydrogen atom or methyl group.

5. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that used for the dispersant and meloxicam monomer functional group, capable of polymerization, is a methacrylate group.

6. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the dispersant has a molecular weight in the range from 15,000 to 110000 g/mol and preferably from 20000 to 60000 g/mol.

7. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the associative thickener containing at least one hydrophobic group, representing distillery, cristianini or a mixture of distillery and tristellateia, corresponds to the formula (I)

9. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the associative thickener Chi is lo ethylenoxide and/or propylenoxide links in the group OX 2is in the range from 100 to 500.

10. The use according to any one of claims 1 or 2, characterized in that the associative thickener R is a hydrophobic group, representing cristianini.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing a latex paint composition containing biocides. The method of producing a paint composition involves preparation of a ground phase by mixing one or more pigments, other components of the ground phase and a biocide which is insoluble in water and mixing the ground phase with one or more latex resins and other liquefying components, where the biocide which is insoluble in water is a composition with high content of solid particles which preferably contains at least 50 wt % biocide. Components of the ground phase are selected from one or more components such as: cosolvents, coalescence agents, thickeners, surfactants, pigment dispersers, neutralising substances and antifoaming agents. Liquefying components are selected from one or more components such as: latex resins, pigment suspensions, coalescence agents, thickeners, neutralising substances and antifoaming agents. The water-insoluble biocide is particularly 1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one and is a composition with high content of solid particles which preferably contains at least 80 wt % biocide. The invention also relates to a ground phase for use in the method of producing latex paint which contains one or more pigments, ground phase components and a biocide which is insoluble in water, said biocide being a composition with high content of solid particles which preferably contains at least 50 wt % biocide. Components of the ground phase are selected from one or more components such as: water, cosolvents, coalescence agents, thickeners, surfactants, pigment dispersers, neutralising substances and antifoaming agents.
