The invention relates to biotechnology and can be used to study the genetic nature of energy metabolism and obesity. Examination of the subject and diagnosing predisposition to elevated levels of total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol is carried out by determining in a biological sample the presence of a polymorphism in the signal peptide preponderated Y (NPY). The substitution of leucine in position 7 Proline in the signal peptide is indicative of a predisposition to increased levels of total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol. Claims

1. The DNA sequence encoding preponderated Y (pepoNPY), comprising the nucleotide sequence of the natural pepoNPY, where the nucleotide sequence encoding a signal peptide with the substitution of leucine at position 7 to Proline, is a sequence underlined in exon 2 of Fig.1B.
