Fire retardant intumescent paint

(57) Abstract:

The invention relates to fire-retardant paints, varnishes and lacquers that are designed to protect flammable materials, and is intended for use, for example, in construction. Fire-retardant paint is an aqueous dispersion based on acrylic dispersion or a mixture of it with a Homo - or copolymer dispersion of vinyl acetate, containing the intumescent additive mixture of pentaerythritol and ammonium polyphosphate with respect to their 1:1.3 to 2.6, respectively, as well as anionic and/or neinogennye surfactant, defoamer, aterially thickener, preservative additive, titanium dioxide, talc or micro-talc may tetraborate of sodium and water in certain proportions of these components. The composition is stable during storage, the moisture-proof coating, has good decorative properties, and when exposed to fire swells to form a heat insulating and fire resistant layer on the substrate. table 1.

The invention relates to a paint and varnish materials, namely, fire-retardant latex paint to cover, and can be used for interior use on wood, plaster, cardboard and drutsa protection of the surfaces of such products from the fire.

Fire retardant coating provide fire-retardant action in protecting legkousvoyaemyh surfaces /wood, paper, cardboard, fabric and heat insulating properties while protecting metal and other non-combustible surfaces in order to improve their fire resistance in case of fire.

Fire retardant coatings are widely used in construction to prevent Flammability of structures and products of wood, chipboard, glass, etc. the Principle of the protective action of most coatings is to reduce the depth and speed of heating of the surface to be protected.

Example coatings, fire retardant effect which is due to cooling of the surface layers due to the endothermic processes of decomposition and allocation by the intense heating of non-flammable gases (water vapor) are, in particular, coatings on the basis of liquid glass (EN 2071491 1997; 2140948, 1999; SU 1513005, 1990, SU 1775386, 1992).

Temperature designs are protected by these coatings, a long time does not exceed the boiling point of water.

However, in most cases, these coatings are ineffective. They emit a small amount of water.

Decisive facto is which depends on the thickness of the coating.

However, excessive increase in the thickness of the coating that is useful from the point of view of fire safety, can negatively affect their operational properties.

From this point of view, the most promising are fire retardant intumescent coating.

These coatings have a relatively small thickness, which increases significantly in fire conditions, when high-temperature exposure.

The resulting porous (in particular, the carbonized layer) has a high thermal insulation characteristics and provides effective protection of structures against fire. (L. N. Maslakowski and other Organic coatings with low Flammability. - L.: Chemistry, 1989, S. 90; RU 2105030, 1998; EN 2120956, 1998; EN 2028348, 1995; US 4179298, 1979; WO 00/27934, 2000; US 4879320, 1989).

The main components of the intumescent fire retardant coatings are binder (polymer), intumescent additives - foaming agents (polysaccharides, polyols, nitrogen-containing compound is urea, dicyandiamide) and flame retardants, for example, phosphorus - and nitrogen-containing compounds.

Known flame retardant composition of enamel (L. N. Maslakowski and other Organic coatings with low Flammability.- S. 74-75), comprising a binder - policyreport, epoxydecane soybean oil and an organic solvent.

However, when the temperature polyvinyl chloride decomposes, which is accompanied by a large smoke, in addition, due to the presence of an organic solvent such composition is toxic.

Know of any other fire retardant intumescent composition for coatings based on water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resin as a binder comprising ammonium polyphosphate dicyandiamide, pentaerythritol, kaolin, glass fibre and water (EN 2028348, 1995).

Due to the fact that ammonium polyphosphate decomposition, forming an acidic environment causes the curing of melamine-formaldehyde resin, the preparation of such a composition must be directly before coating that is technologically difficult to implement, for example, at the construction site. Furthermore, the presence of dicyandiamide, emit when burned, toxic substances, makes the composition of the toxic and degrades the environment.

From WO 00/27934, 2000 known composition for fire-retardant coating comprising as a binder a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde resin or epoxy resin with hardener, or alkyd resin, or kremnijorganicheskogo ammonium, urea, ammonium chloride, boric acid and filler (e.g. talc).

The flow rate of 0.2-0.3 kg/m2the coating thickness of 0.18-0.25 mm (for wood) and respectively - 1.5-2.0 kg/m2, 1,4 - 1,6 mm for metal; drying time - 36 hours; weight loss by burning of 4-6%, while the residual combustion to 0.4 sec. When used as a binder urea - formaldehyde resin in aqueous solution, with regard to the content in the composition of a large number of ammonium polyphosphate and ammonium chloride, the composition for the above reasons, has low viability. When used as a binder other specified resins it is necessary to use organic solvents, which increases the toxicity of the composition.

From US 4879320, 1989 known composition for fire-resistant coating of various substrates, including as a binder polyvinyl acetate or acrylic resin, epoxy resin, or a combination of (1-50 wt.%), 10-40 wt.% foaming agent (tripolyphosphate, ammonium, diammonium phosphate, polemoniaceae), preobrazujushchij (coke forming) agent (dipentaerythritol or polyhydric alcohol, or chloroparaffin or a combination of them - 4-35 wt.%); gas-emitting agent (melamine coloniali - (calcium carbonate or barites - 0-40%), 10-60% solvent a (water, alcohols, hydrocarbon solvent), refractory fibers consisting of Al2O3- 40-55 wt. % and SiO2- 40-55 wt.% (with the addition of small amounts of F2O3, TiO2, K2O, Na2O and ZrO2) 3.8 l (1 Gal) liquid component take 1-80 ounces of refractory fibers.

Obtained on the basis of this composition, the coating has high flame-retardant properties: when heated above 650oC coating bubbled with 5-12-fold increase in volume, forming a protective insulating layer.

In this patent US 4879320 no information specifically used as a binder of acrylic resin: organic or aqueous dispersions. The composition is difficult to prepare. This known composition, as most of the known fire-retardant intumescent formulations contain additives such as dicyandiamide, urea, melamine resin, which when heated, decomposed, emit toxic substances.

The main criterion for fire safety of polymeric materials is their Flammability, however, a serious threat to human life when the fires are Otie which the presence of such additives, as dicyandiamide, melamine resin and urea, is undesirable.

From patent US 4179298, 1979 known composition for intumescent fire protection coatings on different substrates (paper, cardboard, wood and so on), consisting of 40-99 wt. % film-forming water dispersions (latexes) Starovoitova, polyvinyl acetate, acrylic separately or in combination in combination with a dispersing agent such as water, aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones) and 1-60 wt.% intumescent fire-retardant polyamides. The composition may further contain up to 15 wt.% additives such as pigments, intumescent agents, wetting (surface active agents), fillers, fungicidal and bactericidal additives (preservatives and additives). The coating has good flame retardant properties, but because of the presence of the polyamide also applies to toxic compounds. The technical nature of this composition is the closest to the claimed invention.

The technical objective of the claimed invention to provide an environmentally friendly clean composition, combination of good flame retardant properties and decorative properties, it can be used widely in Stroitel what I technical objective is achieved by that fire-retardant intumescent paint, including (binder) film-forming water acrylic dispersion or blend it with Homo - or copolymer of vinyl acetate dispersion, water, pigment, filler, surfactant (wetting agent), preservative additive, intumescent additives, contains as a pigment titanium dioxide as filler talc or micro-talc, as surfactants anionic and/or neinogennye surfactant, as intumescent additive mixture of pentaerythritol and ammonium polyphosphate with respect to their 1:1.3 to 2.6, respectively, and additionally coalescers additive, defoamer, thickener based on esters of cellulose and possibly sodium tetraborate in the following ratio of components, wt.%:
