SUBSTANCE: coating composition adapted to selectively retain water vapour as a function of humidity when cured to form a barrier layer, comprises a hydrophobic component comprising a styrene-butadiene latex having a carboxylation of 0 to 20%; a hydrophilic component comprising a polymer selected from polyvinyl alcohol and sodium polyacrylate and a hydrophilic filler selected from kaolin clay; the coating composition after curing is effective to provide variable water vapour permeability of 1 perm or less at an average relative humidity of RH of 25% and about 15 Perm or more at an average relative humidity of 95% as measured by ASTM E96 at 21°C, and tested by applying and curing the composition on craft paper. The invention also relates to an article capable of selectively retaining water vapour, depending on humidity, comprising a substrate of a building material and a barrier layer applied to a substrate of a building material obtained by curing the above coating composition. The coated article is designed in such a way that it can exhibit a certain permeability profile such as, for example, a variable value of water vapour permeability of about 1 Perm or less at an average relative humidity of RH of 25% and about 15 Perm or more at an average relative humidity of 95 %, measured according to ASTM E96 at 21°C.

Aqueous solutions contain at least one optical bleach, polyvinyl alcohol, having extent of hydrolysis over 75% and Brookfield viscosity of 2-40 mPa·s, and water. This composition may be used for paper coating. It may be applied on paper after its moulding to produce chalk overlay paper.

SUBSTANCE: coating composition consisting of ink-compatible pigment, water-soluble binder, and cationic fixative is deposited onto one of the sides of based paper and the other side is covered with detwisting coating, after which glossy surface is formed. Coating composition is supplemented by wettability controlling agent based on polydimethylsiloxane resins in amounts 0.4 to 1.6% of the weight of pigment. Water-soluble binder is a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol with polyvinylpyrrolidone at ratio (90-50):(10-50) in amount 40-60% and styreneacrylic latex in amount 15-20% of the weight of pigment. When forming glossy surface, polyethylene oxide-based plasticizer is used in amount 7-15% of the weight of pigment followed by supercalendering at pressure in roll contact zone 20-25°C and temperature 50-90°C.

FIELD: pulp and paper industry; methods of production of the pigment for manufacture of the cardboard and paper.

SUBSTANCE: the invention is pertaining to the method of production of the pigment for manufacture of the cardboard and paper and may be used in pulp and paper industry at production of the filled paper, the coated paper and the cardboard. In the water at intense stirring feed powders of calcium hydrate and calcium carbonate at the ratio of the indicated components accordingly from 1.0:2.2 up to 1.0:12.9. The produced suspension is gradually added with aluminum sulfate at its ratio to the total mass of the calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate from 1.0:0.85 up to 1.0:4.30. Then the temperature of the mixture is increased up to 8О-85°С and the produced reaction mixture is kept at stirring within 90-180 minutes with formation of the dispersion of the pigment with the share of the dry substances in it equal to 20-35 %. Then the dispersion is dried and grinded into the powder. The powder is dispersed in the water containing the given amount of the dissolved coolant and-or binding - starch or polyvinyl alcohol. The technical result of the invention production of the pigment with the new properties, that allow to expand the field of its application at manufacture of various types of the cardboard and the paper.

EFFECT: the invention ensures production of the pigment with the new properties, expansion of the field of its application at manufacture of various types of the cardboard and the paper.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to pigment, which can be used in manufacture of paper with filler, coated paper, and cardboard. Calcium hydroxide and calcium carbonate powders taken in proportion between 1.0:2.2 and 1.0:23.5 are added to vigorously stirred water, after which temperature of mixture is raised to 80-85°C and resulting reaction mixture is kept being stirred for 90-180 min to form dispersion of pigment containing 20-35% solids.

EFFECT: improved quality of pigment at lower cost and extended application area.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a coating pigment composition for paper and/or cardboard. The composition contains a binder substitute in form of an aqueous dispersion of a styrene-acrylate copolymer with content of solid substance of 10-50%. The copolymer is a product of free-radical emulsion copolymerisation of a styrene monomer or substituted monomer thereof - α-methylstyrene or vinyl toluene or a mixture thereof with an acrylate monomer from C1-C4 alkyl acrylates or C1-C4 alkyl methacrylates in the presence of starch. The mean particle size of the copolymer is less than 40-70 nm. Also described is paper or cardboard coated with said coating pigment composition.

EFFECT: invention reduces the amount of latex binder in the composition while preserving or improving strength properties of coated paper or cardboard.

FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of improving rheological properties of a water pigment suspension in compositions for paper coating. The method includes addition of a dispersant to the water phase of the suspension, which does not contain or does not yet contain pigment particles. The dispersant represents water polymer dispersion with content of the solid substance 10-50%. The polymer is represented by styrene-acrylate copolymer, obtained by copolymerisation of styrene, substituted styrene or their mixture and C1-C4 alkylacrylates, C1-C4 alkylmethacrylates or their mixture in the presence of starch or dextrin. The invention also relates to the dispersant for suspension of a pigment, containing the first and second components. The first component contains the said styrene-acrylate copolymer. The second component contains an ordinary dispersant such as polyacrylate with a straight chain. Weight ratio between the first and second component is in the range of 50:50-99:1.

EFFECT: invention ensures improvement of rheological properties and high-shear characteristics of water suspension of a pigment in compositions for paper coating.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of a wide range of high-quality paper or cardboard with coating, recyclable, to create articles with improved barrier properties, in particular for packing foodstuffs or other products sensitive to environmental influences. Surface sizing and calendering paper or cardboard is carried out. The paper or cardboard are coated with the aqueous polymer dispersion. The coating is applied by one or more units for application of coating which are autonomous with respect papermaking or cardboard making machine. The coating consists of at least two layers. The second layer of the coating contacts with the first layer. Each layer of the coating is made from an aqueous polymer dispersion containing from about 70 wt % to about 90 wt % emulsion polymer binder and from about 10 wt % to about 30 wt % pigment. The aqueous polymer dispersion additionally comprises additives selected from the group consisting of thickeners, anti-foaming agents or antifoamers, dispersing additives, cross-linking agents, antifrictional additives, release agents, adhesion reducing agents. The coating does not contain wax in detectable amounts.

EFFECT: method produces an article of paper or cardboard with the coating having improved barrier properties, and is suitable for heat sealing.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to an emulsion polymerisation method for obtaining aqueous dispersions of a polymer which is different from any chloride-containing polymer. The method involves polymerisation of (a) 20-80 pts.wt conjugated aliphatic dienes, (b) 20-80 pts.wt vinyl aromatic compounds, (c) optionally up to 10 pts.wt ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or dicarboxylic acids, preferably 0.1-10 pts.wt, (d) optionally up to 20 pts.wt nitriles of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, (e) optionally up to 20 pts.wt copolymerisable vinyl compounds different from components (b), (c) and (d), (f) optionally a base, preferably in an amount which is sufficient to neutralise between approximately 1% and approximately 50% carboxylic acid groups of component (c). The method is realised in the presence of water, an initiator(s) and at least one emulsifying agent (g), where the emulsifying agent (g) contains: (g1) at least one sulphated ethoxylated fatty alcohol, having the average number of ethoxy groups n1, (g2) at least one sulphated ethoxylated fatty alcohol having the average number of ethoxy groups n2, where: n2≥n1 + a×n1 , a≥0.5, preferably a≥1, and n1>0, preferably n1≥2. Emulsifying agents (g1) and (g2) are present in amount of 0.1-5 pts.wt per 100 pts.wt of the total weight of monomer components (a)-(e).
